Carmichael urges people in Isles to claim fuel payments

Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael is urging people in the Northern Isles to ensure that they are not missing out on the financial support available to help with heating costs during periods of cold weather.

As part of the recent comprehensive spending review, the government confirmed that the temporary increase in cold weather payments would be made permanent. These are grants made to people in receipt of certain benefits to help with additional heading costs in winter. In addition to this, people aged over 60 can claim for a winter fuel payment of up to £400 for the same purpose.

Commenting, Mr Carmichael said:

'Although the recent period of wintry weather has affected people in all parts of the country, areas such as the Northern Isles have been hit particularly hard. Those in London complaining about the disruption snow has caused to their daily routine have clearly never tried to get on a flight out of Kirkwall during a period of inclement weather.

'Despite the difficult economic circumstances, the Government were able to protect vital winter fuel payments available to older people in Orkney and Shetland as part of the recent comprehensive spending review. Many of those on income support or employment and support allowance will also be eligible for cold weather payments to help with heating bills.

'I would urge all of those who think they may be eligible for help to ensure that they are receiving all the support to which they are entitled. Anyone who requires further advice or information should not hesitate to contact my office or their local Citizens Advice Bureau.'
