Commenting on reports that some Scottish primary schools are at less than half capacity, Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith MSP said:
"It's essential that the impact of closure on the local community as well as all possible alternatives to closure, are examined.
"Closing a primary school is an emotive and complex subject because of the central role played by schools in their communities.
"Liberal Democrats believe that a thorough consultation and assessment has to take place before any school is earmarked for closure.
"The schools consultation act passed last year improves consultation processes between schools, parents and local councils."
